Ian and Judith Telfer support Birtley Aquatic Centre

Following the closure of Birtley Swimming Baths by Gateshead Council, the members of Birtley Amateur Swimming Club were without a home.

It was suggested that a Community Asset Transfer may be possible if sufficient funds could be raised. The Swimming Club supported this suggestion and as Vice-Chairman of Birtley Swimming Club, Judith Telfer, wife of Ian Telfer, who is a member of Mowbray Lodge agreed to front and launch a Crowdfunding Appeal, with the target of £20,000, which was achieved.
 
Significant donations from various sources including  Durham Masonic Charitable Foundation have enabled the scheme to go ahead with the re-opening of  the pool, now named Birtley Aquatic Centre.  Thanks to the dedication of those involved the Centre is due to re-open on 16th September 2024, marking a new chapter for local residents and underscoring the impact of charity and community Spirit.
